Lip Filler How Long Does Swelling Last? Cost, Reviews, Methods | Pascal

Thinking about lip filler on a short Seoul trip, and asking "lip filler how long does swelling last" before you commit to a family dinner, a wedding photo or the long flight home?

Read this before you fix the date of your appointment.

By the end you'll know how lip swelling usually behaves day by day, what reviews get right and wrong about it, which methods and choices change it, and what decides the cost. That lets you put the injection where it fits your trip and your budget.

Hello, I'm Dr. Kang Kyoungjin, Representative Director at Pascal Clinic in Seoul.

I hold a PhD in anatomy and taught anatomy at a medical school before moving into plastic surgery, and fillers are one of my focus areas. Plastic surgery and dermatology share one building near Sinsa Station Exit 8, and our filler prices are published per session on the site.

I wrote this because the choice people most often get wrong is not the filler. It's the day they book it, too close to the moment they need to look like themselves.

For most people, lip swelling peaks in the first day or two, eases over the following days and is hard for others to notice within about a week. The last bit of puffiness usually fades by around the second week, and bruising can keep its own, slower schedule.

If you already have dates, send one front photo of your lips in daylight and your arrival and departure days on WhatsApp, with the question you most want answered, such as which day of your stay suits the appointment.

What happens inside your lips during the first week?

Two things make a lip swell after filler. The first is the injection itself: every pass of a needle or blunt cannula is a small injury, and the body answers with fluid and inflammation. The second is the gel. Most lip fillers are hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule that holds water, so the product draws some fluid toward it while it settles.

The lip is built in a way that exaggerates both. Under the thin red skin sits a ring of muscle, a dense web of small blood vessels and loose tissue with room to fill with fluid. That's why an amount that looks modest in a cheek can make a lip look clearly bigger on the first day.

Doctor's note

Good results start from an exact understanding of structure, not from feel, and the lip shows why. It opens, closes, smiles and speaks all day, so it has to work well before it can look good. When I think about swelling, I think about where the gel sits relative to the muscle and the vessels, because that shapes both the first few days and the result you live with.

Here is how the first two weeks usually unfold after lip injections. Treat it as a typical pattern, not a schedule.

WhenWhat you usually seeWhat it means for plans
First dayTight, tender, larger lips; some unevennessStay in, ice gently, no dinners
Second and third dayOften the puffiest, worst in the morning; bruises darkenKeep these days quiet
Rest of the first weekMost puffiness drains; shape starts to read as yoursSocial plans usually fine
Second weekResidual firmness softens; gel settlesPhotos and judging the shape

Why one person is puffy for a day and another for a week

The amount placed in one session matters most. A small top-up in lips that already hold some filler tends to settle faster than a first lip augmentation, where the tissue is stretched for the first time.

Risks and side effects to know

Method plays a part too. Doctors use either a fine needle or a blunt cannula, and the work may focus on the lip border, the body of the lip or both. Fewer entry points often means fewer bruises for many people, though both methods cause some swelling.

Then there is you. Blood-thinning medicines and some supplements can make bruising more likely, so mention them before treatment rather than stopping anything on your own. Alcohol, salty meals, heat, hard exercise and sleeping flat can all keep fluid in the lips a little longer in the first days.

Where should lip filler go in your Seoul trip?

Say you're 56, flying from Vancouver to visit your sister for seven days. You land on a Monday and fly home the following Sunday. Your lips have thinned with age, the upper lip has fine vertical lines, and you want a little more shape, not volume that announces itself.

I would put the appointment early, on the Tuesday or Wednesday. The puffiest days then fall on quiet days, and your sister's Friday dinner lands when most people look like themselves again. Our hours are Monday to Friday 10:00–19:00 and Saturday 10:00–17:00, and we're closed on Sundays and public holidays, so with a Sunday flight, Saturday is your last chance to be seen in person.

If the trip has one fixed event early on, such as a wedding on day two, book the filler after it. Flying soon after treatment doesn't usually change the filler, but a long flight means sitting still, salty food and little sleep, which can keep puffiness around a bit longer.

Combining treatments changes the calculation. A buried-suture double eyelid procedure has its own swelling course, so plan the trip around the longer recovery and fit the filler into it. Put the question "lip filler how long does swelling last" next to your actual calendar, and the right day usually becomes obvious.

If your dates look anything like that example, send a side photo of your lips in daylight on WhatsApp and ask which day of your stay leaves enough quiet time before your event.

What do reviews say about lip filler swelling?

Three claims come up again and again in review threads. Some hold up and some don't.

"It's gone by the next morning." That can happen after a small top-up. After a first treatment, it's more common to wake up puffier on the second day than on the first.

"Lumps mean it was done badly." Early lumps are often swelling around gel that hasn't settled yet, and many soften over the first two weeks. A lump that stays firm after that, or one that is painful, red or warm, is a reason to be examined.

"Ice fixes everything." Cold compresses in the first day help comfort and swelling for many people. Heat works the other way, so saunas, a jjimjilbang visit or hot yoga are better saved for the end of your trip.

What decides the cost of lip filler in Seoul?

The gel and the amount are chosen at the consultation, and those two things set most of the cost. Beyond that, a few factors move it:

  • The amount of product your lips need for the shape you want, which follows your anatomy.
  • The product type, since gels differ in firmness and how they are meant to behave in a moving lip.
  • Other areas in the same session, such as lines around the mouth or the chin.
  • Your filler history, because older filler or uneven results from a previous treatment can change the plan.
  • Days in Seoul, if you want an extra weekday before your flight to have the area looked at again.

Adding something else to the trip adds its own session and recovery. Mira Dry for underarm sweating is one example. Surgery is a different calculation altogether: an operation such as arm contouring sets your trip length by itself, and filler would fit around it.

Our filler prices are published per session in Korean won, excluding VAT, and final quotes follow your exam because the right procedure and extent depend on your anatomy. To know what it would cost for your case, ask on WhatsApp with a front photo of your lips.

What can go wrong, and who should wait

The common reactions are swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, itching and small lumps. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notes that many of these resolve in a few days to weeks.

As general medicine, these are reasons to wait or talk it through first:

  • An active cold sore, infection or inflamed skin on or around the lips. Filler can trigger an outbreak in people prone to cold sores.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • A bleeding disorder or blood-thinning medication.
  • Allergy to lidocaine or to any filler component.

The rare but serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel and blocking blood supply to the tissue. The FDA advises getting immediate care for unusual pain, vision changes, or white, gray or blue skin near the injection site. If that happens after you fly home, go to emergency care where you are first. For a lump or asymmetry that persists, see a doctor locally and send photos to us on WhatsApp too. Hyaluronic acid filler can generally be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which is one reason it's the usual choice for lips.

Whether filler suits you is confirmed at an in-person exam, and risks are explained before you decide. Individual results vary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fly the day after lip filler?

Flying doesn't usually affect hyaluronic acid filler, but the second day is often the puffiest. Many people prefer a few quiet days first, and a weekday in Seoul before the flight in case they want the area checked.

How long does bruising from lip filler last?

Bruises often darken over the first days and then fade through yellow over a week or more. They can outlast the swelling, so plan photos for the second week if you bruise easily.

When will I see the final shape of my lips?

Most people judge the shape around the second week, once the swelling has gone and the gel has settled. Early unevenness during the first days is usually swelling, not the result.

Should I stop my medications before lip filler?

Don't stop prescribed medication on your own. Mention blood thinners, supplements and allergies when you message, and discuss them with the doctor who prescribed them before your trip.

How long does lip filler itself last?

Hyaluronic acid filler is gradually broken down by the body. The FDA notes that how long a filler lasts is tied to the filler material and the area injected, and a moving lip is one of the more active areas.

I went to get MiraDry treatment, and I liked that the building was huge and the nurses and receptionists were all friendly. Maybe because the director is so cheerful, they were joking around with each other, which created a great atmosphere that really helped ease my tension and made the procedure easier. I also liked that the director didn't seem authoritarian. Getting the anesthetic injection really, really hurts, but... once the anesthesia took effect, the procedure didn't hurt at all. It seems to take about 30 minutes for each side (left and right), and since the anesthesia takes about 10 or 15 minutes to activate, it's probably best to allow at least two hours for the visit. The procedure itself really didn't hurt, and I actually dozed off lol. It was great that the director kept checking to make sure I wasn't in pain throughout the session, and the nurses massaged my arms to make sure I was okay!
